Coding Club Instructor

Overview

I founded and now run a coding club at my former high school, where I teach programming to students of varying experience levels. What began as a volunteer initiative in my final years of school later became a paid position due to its success and continued demand.

My responsibilities include designing lesson plans, teaching programming concepts, creating original learning materials, and coordinating sessions with school staff. The goal of the club is to help students develop problem-solving skills and build confidence in programming.

Challenges In Detail

Managing Different Skill Levels

Challenge

Students joined the club with a wide range of experience levels. Some had never written code before, while others already understood core programming concepts. A single fixed lesson structure risked either overwhelming beginners or failing to challenge more advanced students, reducing engagement and learning effectiveness.

Solution

I designed lessons with a layered structure. Each session introduced core concepts in a clear, accessible way that all students could follow, followed by optional extension exercises that explored more advanced applications of the same concepts. This allowed students to progress at their own pace while still participating in the same lesson. I also provided individual guidance during exercises, adjusting explanations based on each student's level of understanding.

Result

This approach ensured that beginners could build confidence and foundational skills without feeling overwhelmed, while more experienced students remained engaged and continued developing their abilities. It created an inclusive learning environment where students with different skill levels could learn effectively together.

What I Learned

I developed the ability to break down complex technical concepts into simpler components and communicate them clearly to different audiences. I also learned how to design structured learning experiences that accommodate varying levels of prior knowledge.

Creating Effective Learning Materials

Challenge

There were no existing teaching materials tailored to the students' needs, so I needed to create lessons from scratch. The materials had to introduce programming concepts in a clear and logical progression, while remaining accessible to beginners and still useful as a reference for more advanced students.

Solution

I designed and created original teaching materials, including example programs, exercises, and guided walkthroughs. I structured lessons to introduce one concept at a time and ensured each new topic built logically on previous knowledge. I focused on using simple, clear examples to demonstrate concepts before introducing more complex applications. I also tested exercises beforehand to ensure they were achievable while still encouraging problem-solving.

Result

The structured materials made lessons more consistent and easier for students to follow. Students were able to work independently using the provided examples and exercises, which improved their confidence and ability to solve problems on their own. The materials also became reusable resources for future sessions.

What I Learned

I learned how to design clear and structured technical documentation, and how to present complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand. This strengthened my ability to organize information logically and communicate technical concepts effectively.

Organising and Running the Club

Challenge

Running the club required coordinating with school staff, scheduling sessions, and ensuring each meeting was structured and productive. This involved balancing administrative responsibilities with teaching, while maintaining consistency and reliability.

Solution

I worked closely with the head of co-curricular activities and the assigned teacher to schedule sessions and align the club with the school's structure. I planned lessons in advance and prepared materials ahead of each session to ensure efficient use of time. I also took ownership of guiding students during meetings, answering questions, and ensuring everyone remained engaged and supported.

Result

The club ran consistently and became a reliable learning environment for students. Its success led to the role becoming an officially recognized and paid position, demonstrating the value and sustainability of the program.

What I Learned

I developed leadership, organizational, and time management skills. I also learned how to take ownership of a project, coordinate with stakeholders, and ensure consistent delivery of structured technical sessions.
